About this collection

This collection includes twenty-one booklists and bibliographies published by the New Orleans Public Library from the 1960s and 1970s. The purpose of these publications was to provide the general public with a list of information resources concerning matters of general interest, including reader advisory, business and investment, consumer protection, social services, foreign language materials and instruction, and identity and gender politics. Of particular interest is this collection’s representation of social issues of the day, including a focus on the black community, women’s rights, campus protests, drug culture, and the Vietnam War. While informative in nature, these materials were also created to be eye-catching and often incorporated bright colors and artful designs to attract public attention.

Materials included in this collection were published by the Business and Science Division, the Information and Reference Division, and the Foreign Language Division, all departments of the New Orleans Public Library. Items are arranged alphabetically according to booklist title and include publishing department and date when available. This digital collection represents a sample of the items included in the New Orleans Public Library Booklists and Bibliographies Collection.
