About this collection

The Department of Public Works Photograph Collection contains eight-one photographs showing the streets of New Orleans in varying stages of progress. The majority of these images document the WPA's street paving project, between 1936-1939. During this time the WPA was responsible for resurfacing some 60 miles of road spanning 15 major streets across the City of New Orleans. Also included in this collection are images of several New Orleans fire station houses and of the McGinnis home (now the Magnolia Mansion) [2019]. The McGinnis property was given to the City of New Orleans chapter of the Red Cross and operated as the chapter's headquarters until 1954.
